LESA -  Lawton Environmental Science Area

LESA is now home to a “Moon Tree” named Luna! Selected out of more than 1,300 applicants, Lawton Elementary received a sweetgum seedling which was grown from seeds that flew aboard Artemis 1 in November of 2022.  This seedling grew from seeds that flew more than 270,000 miles aboard the Orion spacecraft.  Fourth-grade students helped plant Luna in what has become the new LESA Moon Tree Garden which was dedicated in May.   This "Moon Tree" carries the legacy of the original Moon Trees that began in 1971 with the Apollo missions.

A Bench for Annabellle...

A memorial bench was dedicated in the memory of cherished garden member Annabelle Tropf.  Member Terry Bushey and friend Connie O'Hanlon were instrumental in overseeing the installation of this bench over the last four years and through all the construction, both road and at Lawton Elementary.  It was dedicated in Friendship Park on July 5th, Anabelle's birthday.
