Our History
Organized March 18, 1947, the Oviedo Garden Club started as the Camelia Circle of the Sanford Garden Club. After two years of being affiliated with the Sanford Garden Club, the Camelia Circle spun off and formed the Oviedo Garden Club. On February 14, 1949, the club was officially recognized by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.
The first president was Mrs. Augusta Covington, and she along with the other garden members met the third Tuesday of each month to talk about gardening and community beautification. Under the direction of City of Oviedo, the club’s beautification projects included Lake Charm Triangle, the Lawton Triangle, and the Cemetery Triangle. They also helped beautify Sweetwater Park. Their community service extended to planting trees, shrubs and flowers. During the holidays they brightened up downtown Oviedo by planting podocarpus trees in the planters they maintained, and finished them off with red festive bows.
Over the next 70 years, the club has continued to be a vibrant part of the community. We still maintain the Oviedo Triangle (formerly the Cemetery Triangle), sponsor memorial benches and tree plantings, and hold bi-annual plant sales. It is the proceeds from these sales that fund the annual grants we award individuals with projects in line with our mission statement and being good stewards of our environment.
